Carl Schwartz is a 3rd generation florist and longtime owner and president of Shaw Florist and decorations and Carl Alan Floral Designs in addition to the state licensed Floral Design School – The Shaw School of Floral Design where he taught & trained some of the premier florists in the tri-state area.
The business was established by Carl’s grandfather in 1918. Carl began working in the floral industry for his grandparents and parents for $5 a day!
In 1967 Carl and his brother Alan then known as Shaw Florists & Decorators established themselves as wedding and event decorators.
Doing work and parties for both President Bush and President Bush Sr and Laura Bush, President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Joan Rivers, Bruce Willis, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Conner, Fergie, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Diana Ross. Through the years Carl has won notable awards from The Knot, The Wedding Wire, The Coveted Mathew Award for Design, The Opulent Events Award & many others!
Carl retired in 2022 and decided to spread his knowledge of the floral industry including arranging, marketing, shop set-up, at home business and a fun afternoon for those seeking a hobby.
Carl has a legacy rooted in passion and dedication to floral artistry.
Our floral workshop offers hands-on training for aspiring florists, while also providing a fun and enjoyable learning experience for hobbyists and flower enthusiasts.

Carl Schwartz, also known as Cal Shaw, brings decades of experience in both floral design and music to his workshops in Philadelphia. Growing up in a family with a floral legacy dating back to 1918, Carl honed his craft from an early age, eventually co-founding Carl Alan Floral Designs, one of Philadelphia’s most respected studios for weddings, events, and custom floral arrangements.
Beyond flowers, Carl is a passionate musician who led the Cal Shaw Orchestra for 25 years, delighting audiences across the city. His love for creativity—whether arranging blooms or performing music—has shaped his unique, hands-on teaching approach.
Carl’s workshops are designed for everyone: those exploring a career in floristry, and hobbyists who want to learn techniques and create beautiful arrangements for personal enjoyment. With Carl’s guidance, students gain practical skills, creative confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the art of flowers.
